Why "Midnight" and "Blink" fear in us curiosity?

Zaktualizowano: 4 kwi 2023

Halloween, oh until Halloween. There is nothing more intriguing than red-hot kids wandering home in search of the missing Excalibur, commonly known as sweets. On the one hand, the joy and desire to get, on the other, the taste of madness, of what once terrified us. Today, next to Russian techno and both the anti-utopian and dystopian world lies a new level of fear - such, we are not able to see the fight with the identity and transience of time. And yes, this is an excuse the author: write about what is so good about the title Midnight and Blink. Let's start with the first of these episodes. What can midnight offer us that it is an aspect of anxiety in our lives? According to the polish dictionary: Fear - anxiety caused by threatening actions or by something unknown that causes danger. In the North episode, we see a man on the screen without any special functions or costumes. The man who deftly learned the script and only repeats the words of the characters in the episode (available at the beginning). What are you afraid of here? Parrots? At first, everyone is trying the Doctor gets nervous that someone is imitating them. The intriguing thing is that this monster-not monster does it all motionless. It's a bit like a stalker approaches our house in the middle of the night. He doesn't move, just looks at our window, and we don't even see his face or other restrictions. Only man - in the shadow, motionless, staring at us. The same impression was initially created by a being from the planet Midnight: a stalker, alienated character, but also in the near inhumane sense. Acting as if she were possessed, although in this case, she is not an evil spirit, but unidentified significant from a mysterious planet. Added to this is the disturbing situation at the moment when we realize that the Doctor himself does not know who he is dealing with. Fear and curiosity in this episode act as a catalyst for a form of anxiety that we encounter in horror films MIdnight are a good story that has been remembered by many people. With a planet with such high radiation that no one could survive, as impossible as fish living on the ocean floor, in complete darkness. And the conclusion from the episode is that we do not know what happened to us and what we will meet is the answer to the question of why this episode arouses our curiosity and fear at the same time. Both grow with panic on board, at the sight of a stationary figure who begins to learn and speak equally with others to eventually manipulate events. Lovecraft scenarios come to mind that seems to want to devour us with fear of the unknown. And fear is also something that limits us throughout our lives... Still from "Midnight". A human face and it was awesome. And what does Wink offer us? Here, in fact, the merit lies with the antagonists of the Tenth, and more specifically how they present themselves: gray statues of angels, operating in secret, slowly approach the victims, and eventually transfer them to the past. Weeping Angels seem to ask: "What could be better than wasting someone's life, getting out of the roots and casting into the past - like spruce on the savannah?" Similarly, a timeline disorder is not right when it is not done voluntarily. And behind all this, there are characters who do not rush to move, as long as we look at them ... I have the impression that it is the presentation of the Weeping Angels as a threat in a world in which the Doctor is busy with something else, gives amazing overtones. There is no help out of nowhere.

In the foreground, we have an ordinary person with everyday problems: Sally Sparrow, who is trying to understand what is actually going on around. Again, realistic ignorance scares us, not surrealism. This is the whole magic of our curiosity and its synergy with fear, getting to know the situation, and facing something that we do not yet understand. Let's hope, then, that fear will be a catalyst for our reasonable curiosity both in life and when we want to be afraid - for example on Halloween. Today, let's not defeat the cleverness of the Weeping Angels, and let's not accept the existence of a being from Midnight. Let this year's feast of fear be filtered by staring at the statues in the city and considering what can knock and in our homes when we are alone in them ... Remember that "when you look into the abyss, it also looks at you." Good luck.
