First, don't get me wrong. I do enjoy watching this movie and I think is great, but I need to write that revenge as a whole bio-ideological concept is very disappointing. After all, we feel only in a short amount of time something special in our madness of fury duty, but in the end, there is no more- often we feel sorry for the things that we do in our vengeance. And this is what I'm talking about in the title. [Warning: Spoilers!]
So, in the very short words- if the full volumes of Kill Bill by Tarantino were the deconstruction of the revenge, The Northman by Eggers was the reconstruction of the revenge. And I think that both of these artworks were the best in the role of their plots. I'm very sorry for Monte Cristo and Hamlet, but haughtiness in words is too simple for showing the true emotion of vengeance - the power of exaltation of savage. I think that the true kind of this exaltation is heard in both of these movies. The Northman shows us the story of the hardcore aesthetic of living in a culture full of severity just like the icy climate. The spiral of the bloody trees and hanging families on the branches is nothing more but the reconstruction of the past that we try to interpret by any things that we can find in a full specter of science- throughout art up to the bones and traces of feet on the ground. And this is what we found- brutal, but sad story of people that even can't tell where is the truth, because they never talk to themself honest, that living in a dream of snow wolves and meat. The tragic spiral of this revenge is in the mistakes of a barbarian father, the non-honest mother with his child, who only wants to murder her child, and an uncle, who only cares about himself, and peace for the women, that don't want to be a wife to idiotic husband. The spiral is closed, and the Amleth is released. Sad and traumatic just like the parent's mistakes defining the whole life of a young kid. "Love is a death of duty". Choice without a choice, just like a stolen false childhood- unbreakable fate like a snake eating its own tail.
The movie has the potential of being the most historical accrued to today's knowledge about the Northmans, but the point is, that I took this movie, because is the third movie by Robert Eggers. After the masterpiece of The Lighthouse and The VVitch - enormous best horror I ever saw (I don't like [mostly any], horrors and I think that's how the horrors should look like), I just want to consume more of this, because Eggers movie is the case of studying the past throughout the myths. In The VVitch we have Christian mythology (Religion is just a living abomination of myths that survives- in my worldview), in The Lighthouse we have Greek Mediterraerian mythology and in The Northman- The Norse mythology. Probably because of the exaltation of the revenge, the third Eggers movie was nothing special and that's why I cannot tell that it was 9/10, however, I can tell that it's my type of vibe, and I put it above his first movie. Just like the other Eggers movies, The Northman is very theatrical in his emotional way, and you can enjoy it as far as you feel the landscape of Iceland. And I swear, that some views in this movie I saw my own eyes. Or eye. But during the winter.
In the end, is another good movie to my Eggers-Waititi-Tarantino-Nolan collection, and I will be waiting for another 4th film from Robert. I would like to speculate that in the next movie we will travel some to Asia or maybe Australia, or we will be exploring the culture of the Native Americans in one of the both Americas. Or Africa.
