"The Lighthouse" - By dark to light and in reverse

Accidently on the anniversary 119 years after the tragedy, I wrote a text about the movie, which is probably inspired by this event xd. Flannana Island is a land with 0,5 km2 placed on the Atlantic Ocean, about 32 kilometers from Lewis Island in Scotland. In the year 1900 something happened on the highest point on island-Eilan Mor where is standing the lighthouse. On the 15th December steamboat which travels near Flannana Island doesn't see that the lighthouse is working, because of the storm they must turn back and return to the island on 26 December. In the Lighthouse there was nobody, the keepers are gone. Expedition trying to solve the mystery never found the bodies of three lighthouse keepers who were on the island on 15 December and working there before these events. Diary that has one of the lighthouse keepers has written some of the mysteries, n the 12th December, Thomas Marshall, the second assistant wrote: „Severe winds the likes of which I have never seen before in twenty years”. It was mentioned that James Ducat, the principal keeper, had been „very quiet” and the third assistant, William McArthur, had been crying. The main member of the expedition to solve this mystery has reports, that the storms are not existing till 17th December.  So, there was no storm, no bodies, no signal from the lighthouse. Does this really happen? The big vanishing. Whatever happened with the lighthouse keepers the mystery is still not solved, covered by fogs of time and loneliness.

This event is plotted into the movie „The Lighthouse”, telling us about the role of psycho emotion in our heads on the lonely island, where are only two people, trying to not lose their religion. This movie is constructed as it can to make the emotion grow. Pattinson and Defoe are playing the lighthouse keepers who going into madness. The visions of nostalgic and compulsive fears are only the fire that lighted the deep minds of the lighthouse keepers. Jung Psychology is the main corner of this what makes the young Thomas (R. Pattinson) and old Thomas (W. Dafoe) in their chains. Slaved love- hidden sex compulsion, hard working in the lighthouse- damnation for the mind. „The Lighthouse” is also about the men's problems in society, putting forward the problem of men's identity.  Authority of how's women can love other women, and that the man is always between hiding his emotions, (like more or less love to other men) is only another step into damnation of problems in the main east patriarchal world like „The Lighthouse” describes to us. Old Thomas also is the metaphorical father for son-young Thomas, the determinant of what should be done and what shouldn't be made it. To be a man, first, you must defeat your father- kind of division in this thought. Dominations between rules of lighthouse keepers have explained the synergy of these two characters: the identity of young and old, problems of men, the tragic fate of humans in loneliness.

This interpretation is represented by what Dafoe accepts and what Pattinson regrets or

maybe only tries to not fill the human fate in time. Seagull, of course, is another symbolism- of punishments for falling into extreme, like finding happiness into alcohol and escape from life. Maybe that's why young Thomas kills the seagull- the core of living in peace with the universe. Pattinson really goes into the wild with drinking and killing life inside of himself, because he really needs to achieve something, just like the humanity in the world. He is a real and true Prometheus. (He) failed but lives in humankind also. Meanwhile, the God- Dafoe trying to punish the will of Prometheus, this God knows what is right: doesn't care about consequential, because he knows, that death is coming for him. He is the corrupted version of Prometheus, going into madness by time, by doesn't kill the birds, because this god kills billions of seagull's in his past. The problem is the Lighthouse- fire, that Prometheus creates from it the people, and god tries to stop him, from not finding the true sense of existence. Dafoe accepts his failings in the past, but the compulsivity of Pattinson wants to discover more knowledge in life and achieve something in the future, step by step, to understand the life of the seagull, which doesn't care about other aspects of realities. Fall from the lighthouse is the achievement of reborn humanity, however without punishments, but with the mission with prospects. The effect of watching this film is unbelievable; Chiaroscuro, setting of the movie, black-white image like the executioner of fate, square shape of the screen that makes concern into your head. The hybrid of Cronenberg and Lovecraft also sometimes gets up in the film, the long epicenter of fear is this what is unknown and uncover by human knowledge- for example, a human mind in „The Lighthouse”. My mindscape has been hacked by this Eggers movie, by the dark to light and in reverse.
